Before and after your session
Before
- Shave the area 12 to 24 hours before your visit. No time? No problem: we trim the hair at the clinic with an electric trimmer, leaving just a few millimetres for the laser.
- Skip deodorant and antiperspirant on the day of your treatment; you can use it again the next day.
- Do not wax, pluck, thread or use an epilator for 4 weeks before; the laser needs the hair root. Shaving is fine.
- Avoid sunburn or strong tanning in the two weeks before your visit.
- Tell us if you are pregnant or take medication that makes your skin sensitive to light.
After
- Some redness for a few hours is normal.
- Use sunscreen and keep the area out of strong sun for a few days.
- Skip saunas, hot baths and hard workouts for 24 hours.
- The treated hairs fall out over the next 1 to 3 weeks. Between sessions you may shave, but do not wax or pluck.
Why shave 12 to 24 hours before?
The laser's energy travels along the hair down to the root, and the root is what it has to reach. A short stubble does that best.
- Too long Much of the energy is spent on the hair above the skin, and too little reaches the root.
- Just right: a short stubble A few millimetres of hair carry the energy straight down to the root, where it counts.
- Shaved too smooth Right after a close shave there is no hair above the skin to guide the energy down.
That is also why we trim instead of shave at the clinic: the trimmer leaves exactly that short length.
Questions people ask
How long does an underarm session take?
Both underarms are done in one short session, so it fits easily into a lunch break. The exact time is shown with the price above.
Can I use deodorant after laser?
Give the skin a day to calm down, then use deodorant as usual. Avoid deodorant on the day of the treatment itself.
Is underarm laser worth it on its own?
Underarms need little time per session, so paying per session works well. If you also want arms, back or chest treated, an Upper Body subscription covers all of them for one price.
How many sessions will I need?
Hair grows in cycles and the laser only reaches hair that is growing on the day of your visit, so you need a series of sessions, 3 to 6 weeks apart. In our experience one session already removes about 40–60% of the hair in the treated area; most people need around 6 sessions for a lasting result. Results vary with hair colour, skin type and hormones.
Why do I need to shave 12 to 24 hours before?
The laser's energy travels along the hair down to the root. A short stubble of a few millimetres carries it there best. Long hair takes up much of the energy above the skin, and right after a close shave there is no hair to guide the energy down. If you had no time to shave, we trim the hair at the clinic to that short length.
Who performs the treatment?
All Somulus therapists are women with a nursing background. They treat women and men, using a medical diode laser with a cooled tip.
